NEWS FLASH: Radiation levels measured inside the containment and shielding of a damaged nuclear reactor are HIGH. That is about as unexpected as finding out that the temperatures inside a coal-fired furnace are high enough to cause instant death to any unprotected living creature, including human beings.

A new report on siting and regulating carbon capture, carbon dioxide (CO2) pipelines, and other associated infrastructure needed for deployment of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and other geologic storage was recently published by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The report is timely given the emphasis of the new Administration and Congress on our nation’s infrastructure and domestic energy production.

Coal production in the United States totaled 739 million short tons (MMst) in 2016, an 18% decline from 2015 and the lowest level of coal production since 1978. Because nearly all coal produced in the United States is used to generate electricity, coal production and coal-fired electricity generation are closely connected.
